Nonogram 10x10

Ten rows, ten columns: a quick puzzle that takes a few minutes.

A nonogram 10x10 is a logic puzzle on a grid of 100 squares, with 10 rows and 10 columns. The numbers beside each row and above each column tell you how many filled squares are in each block, and filling the right squares reveals a picture or pattern. This page plays 10x10 nonograms directly in your browser, and the tool is free to use. You can choose Easy, Medium or Hard, and pick either a random puzzle or a picture puzzle. The library holds 23 picture puzzles at 10x10. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, so you never have to guess between two valid answers. Puzzles you print from this page are free to use in class or in books and printables you sell, such as on Amazon KDP or Etsy.

How to play a 10x10 nonogram

  1. Choose a Difficulty (Easy, Medium or Hard) and a Puzzle type (Random puzzle or Picture puzzle). Click New puzzle to generate a board.
  2. Read the clues. Row clues sit to the left of the grid and column clues sit above it. Each number is the length of one block, listed in order.
  3. Click a square to fill it. To fill several squares at once, drag along a row or column. The drag stays on the line where it started.
  4. Right-click a square to mark it with an X when you know it must be empty.
  5. Check your work with the Check button. Wrong squares turn red, or the page tells you how many squares are still left to fill.
  6. If you are stuck, press Hint. It shows one square that a clue proves and names the row or column that proves it.
  7. When the puzzle is solved, the page shows your time, the number of hints you used, and for picture puzzles, the name of the picture.

The keyboard works too. Arrow keys move, Space or Enter fills a square, X marks a cross, and Backspace clears it. Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) undoes a move and Shift+Ctrl+Z redoes it. The Copy link button gives you a link that opens exactly the same puzzle, which is useful if you want to return to it later or share it.

How to solve a nonogram 10x10

A 10x10 nonogram is solved by filling squares so that every row and column matches its clue. Start with lines that are fully decided. If the block lengths plus one empty square between each pair of blocks add up to exactly 10, the line has only one possible pattern. For example, a row clue of 4 5 uses 4 + 5 + 1 = 10 squares, so it is filled as four squares, one gap, then five squares. A clue of 0 means the whole line is empty.

After filling those lines, look at the others. Each new square you fill or mark can settle another row or column, so keep scanning both directions. Lines that match their clue turn their clue numbers grey, which helps you see what is finished.

What does the overlap rule mean in a 10x10 nonogram?

The overlap rule says that a long block always covers the middle of its line. If one block of length n sits alone in a line of 10 squares and 2n is greater than 10, the middle 2n − 10 squares must be filled. A clue of 6 fills 2 squares, a clue of 7 fills 4, a clue of 8 fills 6 and a clue of 9 fills 8. The reason is that every possible position of the block includes those squares.

What do Easy, Medium and Hard mean on this page?

Easy puzzles can be solved one line at a time in at most 3 passes over all rows and columns, and at least half of all lines give a square on the empty grid, so there are always obvious places to start. Medium puzzles can also be solved line by line, but they need more passes. Hard puzzles have one solution, but line-by-line logic eventually gets stuck. At that point you must test a square: assume it is filled, follow the clues, and if you reach a contradiction, that square must be empty.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 10x10 nonogram free, and do I need an account?

Yes, it is free, and you do not need to sign up or create an account. The puzzles are generated on your device, and nothing is uploaded.

Is my progress saved in a 10x10 nonogram?

Yes. Progress is saved automatically in your browser and restored when you come back to the page. The save stays on the device and in that browser.

Can I play a nonogram 10x10 on a phone?

Yes. On a phone, tap the Fill or X button to choose what a tap does. On a small screen, a Move button lets you scroll a zoomed board instead of drawing, and the Zoom out, Fit and Zoom in buttons resize the board.

Can I print the 10x10 nonogram puzzle?

Yes. Press Print to print the puzzle. Tick “Print the answer page too” to add the solution on a second page.

Can I share a puzzle with a friend?

Yes. Copy link copies a link that opens exactly the same puzzle, so a friend can solve the same grid and compare times.

What do the grey clue numbers mean?

A clue turns grey when its row or column matches it exactly. It is a quick way to see which lines are finished, but it does not prove the rest of the board is right: use Check for that.
